Mystery Bird

with wings folded

This mystery bird appears on a medieval tapestry at the Cluny Museum of the Middle Ages, in Paris. Six tapestries make up the series, known as "The Lady and the Unicorn."

Five of the tapestries represent the senses. The bird above appears on the tapestry thought to represent the sense of smell. See the full tapestry (It's big, so if you don't have a fast connection it may take a while to load.)

Note the white stripe on the folded wing and the long, out-curved forked tail.

Another tapestry includes the same bird, but in flight. See the bird.

Return to Diane's theory about what species the bird is.
