At the Cluny Museum of the Middle
Ages, in Paris, there is a set of six tapestries made in the
15 century. The set is known as "The Lady and the Unicorn."
Scholars agree that this tapestry represents the sense of
smell. The lady holds a garland (presumably fragrant), and
the monkey by her side sniffs a flower.
The mysterious black-and-white
bird is near the top of the tapestry, with wings folded. The
same bird is also found in another of the tapestries, considered
to represent the sense
of taste.
