This Morning Outsideby Diane PorterNovember 11, 2018 Some cold mornings, you gotta give your down coat a good fluffing up. Including the head. You can lose a lot of heat through the head. Actually, Red-bellied Woodpecker's feathers are slicked-down sleek most of the time. He just roused them for a moment this morning. Maybe it felt to him like stretching, or yawning. Birds have tiny muscles in the skin to stand their feathers on end. In our skin, similar muscles jump into action when something thrills us and gives us goose bumps. Like a Red-bellied Woodpecker landing closeby. Diane Porter, Birdwatching Dot Com
