This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

October 24, 2017
Jefferson County Park
Fairfield, Iowa

I think that the prey this raptorous Song Sparrow is clutching in its talons is thistle down. Which means that the bird must be eating the thistle's seeds.

This bird was in a restored prairie at Jefferson County Park, in Fairfield, Iowa. Many native flowers bloomed there in summer, including thistles that are native to the area. These are important food sources for birds.

But it's the first time I've ever seen a Song Sparrow "prey" on thistle.
