This Morning Outside

It sure is nice to have the Killdeer back these last few weeks. I'm grateful they return so early, especially after a snowless winter like this one, when things are looking pretty drab. They run back and forth across the gravel road in front of me. Soon they'll pick a spot to nest, right on the shoulder, with only pebbles to cushion their eggs.

I'll be watching each time I pass by. With luck one day, probably before the grass has even come back, I'll spy the eggs, looking like four rounded rocks. Deftly hidden in plain sight.
