The Binoculars Advisor

by Michael and Diane Porter

Michael PorterDiane PorterAnswers to questions from real people with real questions about how to choose a binocular. The questions are listed at right.

Situation: What is the least expensive good binocular I can buy?

Eagle Optics ShrikeAdvice:We recommend the Eagle Optics Shrike. It's waterproof and well made. A good binocular to start out with.

If you wear glasses, you need a binocular with long eye relief, which will allow you to see the entire field of view even when you're wearing glasses. The Eagle Optics Shrike 8x42 has a generous 17.6 mm of eye relief, so it works for all sizes and shapes of eyeglasses. (It also works for people who do not wear glasses, of course.)

At $99.99, the Shrike is the most economical binocular we've found with long eye relief.

And in fact, it's a surprisingly good binocular for the price. Clear, lightweight, and waterproof. A fine starter binocular.
