The Share Discoveries  feature knocked my socks off. I could look at a bird, mark the location by pushing a button, and then hand off the Visio to my friend. She looked through the Visio, and animated arrows directed her to move her aim, until she was looking at exactly the same bird. I'm looking forward to using this feature to help others find a bird hidden among the foliage of a tree.

Another wow for me was the ability to take a quite decent photos while observing the birds. When I reviewed the photos I'd taken, I found that in addition to the image, the bird's name and the GPS coordinates were also recorded. The built-in camera takes both stills and videos. You switch from stills to videos with the push of a button.

The entire Merlin Bird ID software, including 9000 species, is integrated into the Visio. I was amazed when I pointed the Visio at a male Rufous Hummingbird and read out its name in the right eyepiece. How great that would be for a relatively new birder still getting the hang of identifying birds. Or for even an experienced birder birding in an unfamiliar birding destination.

I found that my skill using this feature improved dramatically over a couple of hours in the field. Also, because the Merlin Bird ID database is constantly improving, the accuracy is bound to get better as time goes on. The observations of birders using the Visio and reporting to eBird will actually help to improve Merlin's database.

The Visio also has a North American Mammal ID app that works the same way as Merlin.

An electronic Compass function reads out the direction and tilt to what you're aimed at. This function provides another way to share information about the location of a target bird. And of course, it's a compass, for hiking, boating, or other traveling.

And your Visio can add more features. There is room reserved in the Visio to upload additional apps. Possibly butterflies, dragonflies, and others that might become available.
