Driving a gravel road, I spot a Northern Bobwhite walking right down the middle of the road. I slow down and barely creep forward, a few inches at a time. I'm reaching for the binoculars riding in the passenger seat, like a companion.
The bobwhite eases over the edge and pauses to look back at me. His crest and tail still look damp from the rain that just ended. How crisply white are his markings!
This is why I always have extra binoculars with me all the time. I keep a pair in my car. So when I need them, even while driving to an ordinary errand in town, I get the bird.
