This Morning Outsideby Diane PorterJanuary 24, 2014 A few American robins hang around Iowa in winter, including this fellow who crossed my icy path this morning. Because they can't get at earthworms in the frozen ground, robins stay mostly in the woods, where they can still find some well-chilled grapes and wild cherries. This guy is having his breast feathers ruffled by the wind, whose plain old temperature (not "wind chill") was 5 degrees. I was wondering if my eyeballs could get frostbite. Truly I cannot imagine how the birds manage. —Diane Porter
