This Morning Outside

I don't know if the red-bellied woodpecker got this round garnet-colored thing out of the bark of the tree, or if he already had it in his beak when he landed there. I don't know whether the thing was animal, mineral, or vegetable.

But the redbelly gave a little toss of his head, and the thing went down his throat. So whatever it was, berry, insect's egg case, or something I can't even imagine, it must have been woodpecker food.
