I never noticed this nest hole in the snag of a dead elm, because it was hidden behind foliage. But now that it has shown itself to me, I'll watch it closer next spring and see what kind of bird might nest there.

For watching
distant birds ...

The first optics a birder needs is a good binocular. If you then want to watch a nest in the woods from a distance and not disturb the birds, you will really enjoy a spotting scope.
