This Morning Outside

He's an immature white-crowned sparrow experiencing his first springtime. All winter he's been visiting my seed-strewn porch. Silently.

But this morning I heard the wistful whistle characteristic of white-crowns, and the youngster's beak opened in time with the performer. So he was the singer. It may have been his very first song.

He also displays his imminent maturity by the black feathers starting to come in on his forehead, replacing the rusty stripes of his babyhood.
