Gift Inspirations
for Mother's Day

Wild Prairie RoseMother's Day comes at the height of spring, when birds are in full song and are at their most colorful. It's a fine time to give a gift that enhances the pleasure of observing birds! Here are a few selected gift ideas that will delight a person who loves birds and nature.

Papilio means Butterfly

Binocular Picks

When you're walking in the garden, sometimes you long to see a blossom up close, without bending over. See the marvelous detail of nature.

The Papilio is a normal binocular for looking at things near or far. What's different about it is that it will focus much closer than conventional binoculars. As close as 18 inches! And without eye strain.

Great for watching butterflies. And if a bluebird stops by the garden, you can look at that too.

Hummingbirds bring joy!

Hummingbird and Columbines

Hummingbirds search every yard for red that mean flowers and nectar. They're looking for nest material, too.

Here's a Hummingbird Lover's Kit that will bring hummingbirds up close where you can really see them.

Includes a feeder that attaches to your window. Colorful book and DVD show what flowers bring hummers to a garden. And hummers love the Hummer Helper nesting material.

Nature's Window Monitor

Nature's Window Monitor lets you listen to birds' songs and all the sounds of nature. From indoors!

Just open your window and extend the probe out the window, and then you shut the window. The sounds outside can now be heard through the monitor inside your house.

We love to wake up to the sound of the birds singing their dawn songs. Kind starts the day off on a satisfying note!

Songbird Portraits CD

Part of the magic of birds is the pleasure their songs bring us. One of our favorite audio CDs is Songbird Portraits, by the great recordist Lang Elliott.

It includes such spectacular bird songsters as wood thrush, meadowlarks, rose-breasted grosbeak, and winter wren. You'll hear 27 species in all.

And it's just the songs. No narration to break the mood. Wonderful!

Beauty in the garden

St. Francis

St. Francis is our favorite decorative bird feeder.

With a little bird on each arm, Saint Francis brings a note of peace to the home and garden. It looks like antique carved wooden statuary, but it's as durable as stone. At 20" tall, it blends in beautifully among flowers.

Birds CD-ROM

See and hear over 900 Birds of North America at the touch of your keyboard. The photos are outstandingly beautiful, and big! It shows each bird's variations — male, female, and juvenile. And it plays their songs.

The CD-ROM includes maps and the sort of info you'd get from a field guide, but in more detail. This is by far the most popular CD-ROM for bird watchers.

There's also a version for the Macintosh.
