Starlings are the stepchildren of American birds. They are not native to the continent. Their ancestors came here on ships, from Europe. They're noisy and gregarious, and they multiply rapidly. They spread from east to west in a few generations. And they have diminished populations of native species by usurping nesing cavities to raise their own young.
