This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

September 5, 2010

Fairfield, Iowa

A morning both sunny and cool filled me with gratitude for being alive and outdoors, with eyes to see and ears to hear. And then a blue-winged warbler sifted through the thicket before me. A moment of perfect happiness.

This is a smart-looking warbler, with its sharp beak and distinct dark line through the eye. In spring the bill is very dark, but in fall it's pale, like this one from today. The blue-winged warbler does breed in Iowa, but I seldom find it in summer. It is always a thrill to see one.
