They can fly already, but they aren't as good as their parents at it. They spend a lot of time sitting on the wire fence, watching the grownups swoop and twist over the pond.

Adult barn swallows have lovely long, forked tails. This baby's will be like that someday also. Another clue to its youth is the fluffiness of the breast feathers.
