This Afternoon Outside

by Diane Porter

June 22, 2009
Through the window at Birdwatching Dot Com
Fairfield, Iowa

Through the window we watched a red-tailed hawk getting mobbed by red-winged blackbirds and an oriole. We managed to grab a shot before the hawk flew off, chased by the blackbirds.

We happen to know the blackbirds have a nest at the edge of the pond, right under this locust tree. And the blackbirds weren't having any part of the hawk that close to their nest. The oriole, whose nest is in a nearby tree, wasn't going for tolerance either.

A nice diversion outdoors for people working indoors on a scorching hot day. Ah, there's always birdwatching, wherever you are!
