It's virtually impossible for squirrels, raccoons, cats, and other critters to climb the Squirrel Stopper pole for suspending bird feeders. (Read how it works here.)
At least, that's what we have found at Birdwatching Dot Com. The nightly maurauders take down every other feeder, but not the ones suspended from the Squirrel Stopper.
A great bonus is that birds love to perch on top of the pole. This spring, the male bluebird has made it his personal throne.
He usually perches there and sings. But the day this picture was taken, his five nestlings were fledging out of the nearby birdhouse. He seemed to be doing a little dance, maybe of celebration.
The picture at right is of the last baby to leave the nest. Here it's just thinking about it. A few minutes later it squirmed out of the box and went down into the grass. The father stayed up on the pole and sang until the baby got it together to fly into the trees.
