First, binoculars. The Eagle Optics Triumph is the best bet for the beginner who doesn't want to spend a fortune on optics. When our team of birders evaluated 42 pocket binoculars for an article for BirdWatcher's Digest, four of the ten judges went out and bought themselves the predecessor of the Triumphs, the Eagle Optics Voyager. Although they already owned binoculars, the judges found these binoculars so small and neat, and so good for the price, that they just had to have them. Now Eagle Optics has upgraded those binoculars, and the result is the even-better Triumph, with a non-slip surface and fully multi-coated lenses. Even if you later move up to a more expensive binocular, these will come in handy as loaners when you take a friend along birding. Next, I chose the Golden Field Guide, because it's compact -- fits in a jeans pocket, and includes all the birds of North American. It's written to help beginners learn about the different families of birds, and it's a time-tested favorite. You will probably want to get more field guides for comparison later on, but this one is a great place to start, because it is so good at getting beginners oriented.
The whole kit is designed to be the easiest, least expensive way to start birding. You get a lifetime ticket to the theater of nature for less than a pair of designer sneakers. Happy birding! Diane Porter |
