This Morning Outsideby Diane PorterAugust 11, 2010 The ardor of house wrens. Every move filled with passion. This wren is visiting my porch table for mealworms. They're for her babies, rolled up in the bamboo outdoor windowshade. Every time she comes back for another mealworm, she scolds me soundly for being there. Or maybe her blast of chatter is her way of thanking me. Whatever it is, I know she means it from the bottom of her toes.
As insect eaters, house wrens have no interest in the birdseed offered at feeders. But once they realize there are mealworms to be had, they become great enthusiasts. As soon as I go outside, this mama wren zips right up to me to see if the mealworms are out yet. And if I'm too slow putting them on the table, she stands there fearlessly and blasts me with her scolding. I do love this little bird. —Diane Porter
