This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

June 30, 2010
In the woods near Birdwatching Dot Com

Field sparrows are the most persistent of summer singers. Their song is a trill that starts out slow and speeds up like a bouncing ping-pong ball. Usually it rises in pitch ending in a high quaver.

This bird came close to where I was standing because there were babies down in the bush waiting to be fed.

The little stinging gnats were out in force, so I had my face and head covered with a dark green net. I could see out well enough to take pictures. And maybe it helped me seem less scary than if my human face had showed.

We have a ways to go to live down our fearsome reputation with the birds.
