This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

June 29, 2010
In the woods near Birdwatching Dot Com
Fairfield, Iowa

Rose-breasted grosbeaks are still singing. The music of summer is largely their songs. And that means that romance is still on their minds.

I've seen adult grosbeaks feeding fledgelings already, but the grossbeaks aren't done with nesting yet. The males are singing all day long as if to outdo each other.

And that means that females are still going to lay more eggs.

This grosbeaks' mate, or his neighbors' mates, are still listening to the songs of all the males and choosing which musician will father their offspring. When the females are really finished with nesting, the males will stop singing.

And not until.
