The Binocular Advisornone

This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

June 19, 2010
Near a wetland at Birdwatching Dot Com
Fairfield, Iowa

A female Widow Skimmer dragonfly is more colorful than a male. Her abdomen is adorned with bright gold jewelry. Here's a female I found near Birdwatching Dot Com.

On the cover of the dragonfly field guide (shown at upper right of this page), the male Widow Skimmer is on the cover. Its abdomen is colored very differently from the female's, but the wing pattern is similar.
