This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

May 29, 2010
In that grassy field near Birdwatching Dot Com
Fairfield, Iowa

You could drive with the window down alongside a pasture full of singing Henslow's sparrows and never know they were there. Their song is only a whispered tisk. When you hear it, you realize that it was there all along, but below the threshold of your attention.

It you look at him carefully, you'll notice that his back is reddish and his head is green. For more about the Henslow's Sparrow, and to hear what his song sounds like when slowed down to 1/10 speed, click to read "An Insignificant Sparrow."
