This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

May 28, 2010
In a grassy field near Birdwatching Dot Com
Fairfield, Iowa

Does this red-winged blackbird look to you as if he's smiling?

It was a beautiful morning. And I happen to know that his wife (or maybe I should say one of his wives) is feeding baby red-winged blackbirds in a nest down in the grass. His name is on the deed to a very nice patch of tall grass. The rains have been good, tasty bugs are plentiful, and the sun is shining. Why shouldn't he be happy?

I was pretty happy too, after visiting the red-winged blackbird and his wife.
