This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

May 23, 2010
On the country road to Birdwatching Dot Com
Fairfield, Iowa

"Look, Ma, I can sing and stand on one foot!"

I'm tempted to caption this picture that way, but it wouldn't be fair. This eastern meadowlark is busy at the serious task of singing to attract a female with whom to nest.

Eastern Meadowlarks post themselves singing all alongside the gravel road from my house to the main highway. I love to drive to town with my window down and listen to one meadowlark soloist after another.
