This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

May 19, 2010
At Birdwatching Dot Com
Fairfield, Iowa

This female Eastern Bluebird has raised five healthy baby bluebirds this spring. They fledged, leaving the nest, on Mother's Day, but they're still accepting free meals from their parents.

The mother's badge of parenthood is her frayed tail, worn from thousands of trips in and out of the nest box. But today she's carrying nesting material into a new nest box. With luck she and her mate will raise a second brood of bluebirds, spreading the loveliest of colors to the Iowa landscape.

If you're interested in how these bluebirds came to trust me enough to get this close to them, read my first adventures hand taming wild bluebirds, "Bluebirds Love Mealworms."
