This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

May 10, 2010
At Birdwatching Dot Com
Fairfield, Iowa

Suddenly an Indigo Bunting appears, the first one of the year. He seems unfamiliar with the area. Maybe he's on his way home to Minnesota to breed and just stopping by my yard for a few hours.

This is an adult male. A male in his first year, hatched just last year, would have tan blotches among the blue feathers. A female would be mostly tan brown, with only a hint of blue on her wings.

The birdbath is the Kozy Spa.
