This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

A black bird with a long tail and a big honking beak, if you're in Jamaica (or anywhere in the Caribbean) is a Smooth-billed Ani. It's a common roadside bird.

Several Smooth-billed Anis patrolled the well-kept lawns at Hope Gardens, in Kingston, Jamaica, when I visited there. They eat grasshoppers, frogs and other small animal life that they can find in grass, and they also like fruit. They didn't seem to be very afraid of people.

Hope Gardens are a pleasant site to visit and a good place to see Jamaican birds easily right in Kingston. As of April, 2010, a few Black-billed Parrots hang out there, among the numerous and very noisy Yellow-billed Parrots. Both species are endemic to Jamaica.
