This Morning Outside

by Diane Porter

April 17, 2010
At Mocking Bird Hill Hotel
Port Antonio, Jamaica

Jamaican Mangoes are said to be common in Jamaica, but I saw only one during my four-day visit. This bird was the manager of the front garden at Hotel Mocking Bird Hill. It was clearly in charge of all the flowers there, but it took nectar primarily from succulents and cacti.

The Jamaican Mango is the biggest of the four Jamaican hummingbird species. In fact it's downright sturdy looking, for a hummer. Its front is completely black, but in good light you can see beautiful plum colors on the face. Jamaica is the only place in the world where the Jamaican Mango lives. I feel very lucky to have seen it.
