This Morning Outside

The dead elm is the birds' favorite tree in our yard. Five flickers (two males and three females) contended hard for which pair would get to nest there.

In the last couple of days, the winning pair has started excavating a new hole. Two days ago they were pecking at the trunk. Yesterday afternoon the male could get his head into the hole. This morning he's in up to his shoulders.
